Traditional Sediment Control

Sediment Runoff in a Stream

Sediment Pollution in Stream

The fabric used to hold sediment at construction sites has 60 micron wide mesh.  This allows clay to flow right through the mesh and down stream, potentially getting into the drinking water supply.  When settlement ponds, referred to as BMP’s, are dredged, the sediment is pumped into bags made of the same fabric and the finest particles flow right through.  The colloidal nature of the runoff particulate matter does not get removed in conventional BMPs.

Traditional Sediment control with this wide mesh fabric allows a lot of runoff to potentially flow into the reservoir.  To be effective a super strong silt fence with a fabric such as MiraWeave® would have to be used to hold these small particles.
